Do you need dietary supplements? Everything you need to know

Dietary supplements are products that contain one or more ingredients like vitamins and amino acids. 

Dietary supplements promise a lot of flashy things. You see some pills for bigger breasts and butts. Some even promise to help you lose weight. It sounds perfect, right? You do not have to hit the gym. All you have to do is ingest some drugs at specific times.  Many young people fall victim to these miraculous supplements, the misinformation in the advertising roping them into it more.

The media is a very good advertising tool for most of these supplements. And with the many things attributed to supplements, many people purchase them and begin usage without making proper research about them. As harmless as they are portrayed, they are not encouraged to be taken without proper prescription. 

According to an analysis by the Food And Drug Administration, studies showed that about a thousand people aged twenty and under suffered serious illnesses linked to the intake of dietary supplements. Deaths were recorded.

Also, a good number of these supplements contain amphetamine. Of course, this is not a part of the label. Amphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant. A very effective drug for obesity and ADHD. (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). Taking amphetamine containing supplements for a long time results in grave side effects like nausea, migraines, cardiac arrests, and a whole lot of others.

Over 80% of the people that take dietary supplements do not need them. Eating a balanced diet is all that is needed. Before you begin to live on vitamin C tablets, think of this. “Do you need them or a few oranges would do?” Taking the natural form of supplements in whole meals is encouraged. Let’s take orange as a case study. Orange contains ascorbic acid(Vitamin C). It is more advisable to eat oranges than take Vitamin C tablets. Worthy of note is the fact that your tablets are of a higher concentration. This makes overdosing a very easy thing to achieve.

Overdosing on Vitamin C leads to very terrible stomach cramps. 

As essential as phytonadione(Vitamin K) is for the clotting of your blood(blood clotting is the formation of a thick coat over the surface of an injury to stop bleeding), overdosing on it leaves you with grave consequences. Osteoporosis is one of them. Vitamin K is a  trace element. I.e your body requires it in very little amounts. 

But would your supplement ambassadors tell you this most of the time? Of course, not. Their main aim is profit maximization.

So, before you drink that supplement or swallow that pill, pause for a moment and think “do I need this or a better feeding habit?” Remember Supplements are not as miraculous as the media tells you they are.
